PERSONAL COMBINATION
Alexander IV In 1254 Pope Alexander IV was elected and held his pontificate for only seven years. Alexander IV died on the 25th of May 1261 in Viterbo, where years before he had prudently moved the Papal seat, in the fear of the persecutions and riots that oppressed the Church of Rome in that historical time frame. For the same reasons, after his death, in order to avoid profanation, his remains were hidden inside the cathedral of St. Lorenzo in Viterbo where they currently rest in a secret location. He began the canonisation process of Santa Rosa da Viterbo and he was responsible for the first transport of the “Macchina”. He was also the first to introduce the figures of the “Facchini” (the citizens of Viterbo who transported the “Macchina” throughout the city center) with their characteristic white clothing and cardinal red waistband and headgear, which represent the purity of priestly clothes.
